Unique Billing Approaches
Our normative approach to billing is to provide a quote prior to initiating a project. Thereafter, each subsequent course of action is likewise quoted throughout the prosecution of the application, and approval as to each subsequent course of action is secured from the appropriate authority prior to our undertaking any course of action. The quote is never exceeded by Kohn & Associates. We invoice as each course of action of prosecution is completed as well as provide a month-end statement that sets forth current financial information on the client’s active matters. Although this is the normative approach for billing, various clients have individualized requests for billing procedures which may be similar to or drastically different from our normative approach. We readily adapt our billing process to satisfy each client’s individual requirements -- a service that is quite uncharacteristic of any other law firm, and which is usually contrary to the practices of many larger law firms.
Local Counsel Policy
Our attorneys frequently travel to our clients, whether the client is within the United States or overseas. We are proud to be considered as “local counsel” to many of our clients in the U.K., Europe, Australia, Israel, and the U.S. Our clients are regularly visited, or visited on an as-requested basis to fulfill our goal to be effectively in-house counsel for every one of our clients. Absolutely no travel costs associated with these regular visits to clients is passed on to the client.
When any of our attorneys is scheduled to be in a client’s area, we will make contact with the client to suggest an informal meeting just to review any matters that may arise. Hence, there is not only a formal periodic approach to management, but also a more casual approach due to our attorneys’ frequent travels. Our attorneys frequently conduct informal meetings with clients at their convenience to review matters that may arise that do not justify a formal meeting, but would still be beneficial for the client to resolve. Many times, such meetings are conducted over lunch or over a cup of coffee -- at no cost to the client.
Disclosure security
We utilize a secured Intranet to further our goal of acting as local counsel to our clients around the world. Our Intranet enables us to communicate in absolute secured confidence, and affords instantaneous delivery and receipt of information. Hence, documents, such as invention disclosures or patent applications, which are held in the highest confidence, can be communicated between Kohn & Associates and our clients electronically. In fact, one of our clients located in the Negev Desert in Israel claims that it is easier to communicate with Kohn & Associates than it is to communicate with Israeli counsel in Jerusalem, only an hour away.
Status Reports
Kohn & Associates also provides status reports customized to each client’s parameters and provided at a frequency commensurate with the client’s needs. For our corporate clients, this service provides global unity and centralization to their intellectual property portfolio. For institutional clients, this provides ready documentation for use by the patent liaison.
